“A ghost can be a lot of things a memory, a daydream, a secret, grief, anger, guilt.” All of these elements are explored in The Haunting of Hill House, the ultimate haunted house story.
The Crain family embark on a project to renovate Hill House, the parents and their five children relish the new challenge, which will lead to them affording their dream family home. However, as the supernatural activity starts to build, their dream will soon turn into their worst nightmare.
The first few episodes focus on individual stories, which is time well spent allowing the audience to gain a greater understanding and motivation of the characters. But additionally this cleverly creates a contrasting point of view to reveal there are always two sides to every story.
The story cuts from the modern day to flash backs of the events that lead to one pivotal, traumatic evening that will change their lives forever.
The family are flawed, wounds are unable to heal from their experiences of Hill House, leaving the siblings damaged and unable to reconcile with their past.
Appearances of ghostly apparitions are subtle at first, but as tension in the story gains momentum, so does the paranormal activity, creating a hugely satisfying sense of drama.
If coupling the complex story with ever shifting multi-dimensional characters wasn’t reason enough to watch The Haunting of Hill House. Let’s not forget this is a horror.
The show delivers a healthy balance of scares that really give you a chill. For me what takes this show to the next level is how the ghosts are utilised. They are there not just to give us a fright, even they they do! They are tightly interwoven throughout the fabric of the story.
The story culminates in an utterly rewarding and plausible crescendo.
