Voyeur – Review

Cast: Gerald Foos, Gay Talese

Director: Myles Kane (The New Yorker: Shorts & Murmurs), Josh Koury (30 for 30)

“I know people are going to call me a pervert, a peeping Tom,” says Gerald Foos who after 47 years confesses to spying on his guests, whilst residing at his motel.

If you ever stayed at the Manor House, Colorado there may be cause for concern, as owner Gerald Foos admits to whiling away the hours in his ‘observation platform’, watching his visitors partake in their nocturnal activities.

Considering himself an observer / researcher, Foos bought his motel in the 1960s. He renovated it to create an ‘observation platform’ in the roof of the bedrooms.

Hiding away in the attic, Foos would spy through vents in the ceiling in order to listen and watch his customers, then chronicle their activities.

“They couldn’t hear me, or see me. But I could hear them and see them,” confesses Gerald Foos.

Having met each other in 1980, Gerald Foos and esteemed journalist Gay Talese forged an unlikely friendship. And with the approval of Foos, Talese goes on to write the book, the aptly named The Voyeur's Motel.

“If you have no trust between your source and yourself, you’re in real trouble,” says Gay Talese.

On the eve of publishing the book, Talese’s submits an article to the magazine The New Yorker, excerpting the book. This article will be the catalyst that puts this trust and friendship to the test.

Voyeur is an interesting documentary that I feel does honestly convey an un-biasness towards both gentlemen.

Indeed there are times that you will equally sympathise with them both, and at other times you will find them equally odious individuals.

As observers ourselves, we watch the breakdown of their relationship as they start to question each other’s integrity.

So become an armchair voyeur yourself by listening and watching this documentary.
